on my own

My palm pilot cheats at solitaire.
It thinks that I don’t know.
It stacks the deck so that I can’t win
And so I told it off
On the subway yesterday.
And the guy sitting next to me thought I was a crazy person
And he got up and he found himself another place to sit, And now I’m
All alone, on my own again.

You know, I saw you Tuesday.
You were coming out of Macy’s
So I stole up and fell in right behind you
So I could be near you,
Even if you didn’t know it.
And the guys that spray the perfume had obviously accosted you,
‘Cause you were smelling like a flower shop
And I started to feel allergic, so I had to let you go, and now I’m
All alone, on my own again.

Hey, and you know it’s not I don’t appreciate
The closet space, the quiet pace,
The empty place with room to grow and
Freedom for my seeds to sow:
It’s just that I had grown accustomed
To your face, the way you taste,
Your breathing in my bed, your kisses,
Satisfying all your wishes;
What do I do now?

I’ve stopped watching the TV
It started talking back to me.
It said that I was a fool to lose you,
So I turned it off.
But it turned itself back on.
So I tried to change the channel, but you were on every station,
And always with a different guy, and he was always better looking than me,
And he usually drove a Mercedes.
And then you started laughing,
And then you put your back to him, and you started to bend over,
And I thought “When did they start showing porno on NBC at prime time?”
And so I picked up my guitar and I smashed it through the TV screen,
And now I’m
All alone, on my own again.

Chorus
Hey, and you know it’s not I don’t appreciate
The closet space, the quiet pace,
The empty place with room to grow and
Freedom for my seeds to sow:
It’s just that I had grown accustomed
To your face, the way you taste,
Your breathing in my bed, your kisses,
Satisfying all your wishes;
What do I do now?

I’ve grown accustomed to your face.
You almost make my day begin.

On my own again.
Can’t believe that I’m on my own again.

On my own . . . again.
